New Vitamin D and Calcium Guidelines from the USPTSF
A new United States Preventative Task Force recommendation concludes that there is not enough evidence to support recommendations for vitamin D and calcium supplementation for the primary prevention of fractures in community based men and premenopausal women. There was enough evidence to recommend against daily calcium supplements and vitamin D for the primary prevention of fractures in post menopausal women. The new recommendation was published by Virginia A. Moyer M.D. MPH from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas October 26, 2013 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The articles recommend that physicians should customize their treatment plan according to each patient. An interesting observation was made in the Women’s Health Initiative trial where there was a slight increased risk of kidney stones associated with vitamin D and calcium supplementation and healthy postmenopausal women.
