Everyone has their peak periods and understanding when you are at your best or worst will help you maximize your energy levels and what you can accomplish throughout the day. Circadian rhythm describes your body’s natural daily sleep wake cycle. This is controlled by a part of the brain that is in the hypothalamus, the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This “control centre” determines when your body feels awake, sleepy, hot or cold and hungry. Feeling awake during the early daylight hours and sleepy when it gets dark is all part of the daily 24 hour cycle. The hypothalamus is connected to the back of your eyes or the retina through nerve fibres which tell your brain when it is time to stay awake and when you should sleep.
